Arlen Edward "Artie" Johns, 75, of 5 Clearview Drive, Vevay, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at King's Daughters' Hospital.

He was born Dec. 26, 1930, in Switzerland County, the son of Brack and Rosa Webster Johns. He was raised in Charlestown and lived in Michigan for 20 years, moving back to Switzerland County in 1983. He was the owner and operator of A.E. Johns Tree Service from 1964 to 2002 and was a foreman at Asplndh Tree Service in Louisville, Ky., from 1951 to 1964. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and attended Fredonia Baptist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda L. Carlton Johns, whom he married July 9, 1951; four daughters, Kathy Johns and Jean Nolf, both of Hudsonville, Mich., Marleana DuShane of Springdale, Mich., and Julie Leap of Vevay; three sons, Roy E. Johns of Phoenix, Ariz., Russell A. Johns of Allendale, Mich., and Todd Johns of Vevay; two brothers, Cecil Johns of Sellersburg and Bobby Johns of West Olive, Mich.; one sister, Ruth Martin of Rising Sun; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchilden; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Fredonia Cemetery in Vevay. Vevay American Legion Post 185 and Vevay Post 5396 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct a flag presentation at the grave.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Fredonia Cemetery. Contribution envelopes are available at the funeral home.
