SERVED DURING THE CIVIL WAR.

The Reading Eagle Newspaper carried his obituary January 20, 1905. As follows:

David A. Stephen, died of pneumonia in the Reading Hospital, aged 60 years, at 2 am today after an illness since last Saturday. He was only in the institution a few hours. Mr. Stephens was a native of Chester County and lived in this city since he was 17 years of age. In his younger days he was a stove molder. Mr. Stephens was a veteran of the Civil War and participated in many important engagements, including the Battle of Gettysburg. At Spottsylvania he was injured. He first enlisted in Company B, 2nd PA Cavalry, and later served in the 12th PA Reserve Corps. He was a body guard at the burial of President Lincoln. Besides his widow, Bertha L.(nee Herr), he is survived by 3 daughters and a son: Bertha l., wife of George W. Fehr of this city, B.B. Stevens of Phila.; Ida, wife of Howard I. Eyler and Mary A., at home. Also two sisters: Mrs. Anna Livingston of Lancaster, and Ada E. Stephens of Atlantic City, and a brother, Harry M. Stephens of Phila.
