The eldest of 10 children born to John Lippitt Eddy and Lydia Gifford, Reuben spent the early years of his life in Erie County, NY. In 1834, he moved with his family to Huron County, Ohio where his parents were highly respected leaders of the community and Society of Friends.

About 1855, Reuben united in marriage to Anna (Fannie) Reynolds [possibly a daughter of Silas and Wealthy Hall Reynolds of Lorain County, Ohio). They lived for several years in Mahaska County, Iowa where their two children, Alice W. and Ira A. were born. By 1870, they had relocated to Elsie, Clinton County, Michigan. Reuben worked as a carpenter and later a wagonmaker.

Among other members of this Eddy family found in Elsie were: Reuben's brothers -- Sherman G. and Ira G. and cousin Charles, son of the elder Reuben Eddy (1806-1884)and Hannah Sigsworth of Camden Twp., Lorain County, Ohio.
