Sherman G. Eddy was the son of John Lippitt Eddy and Lydia Gifford. He grew up in Greenwich, Huron County, Ohio and married at the age of 23 to Catharine Van Schoick (also known as Van Scoy). To this union were born three children -- George, Cora and Ona. Cora died young, and Ona at the age of 34.

During the Civil War, Sherman Eddy served with the 1st Michigan Light Artillery from 3 September 1864 to 1 August 1865. He received a pension for his service.

In 1882, Sherman Eddy moved to Elsie, Michigan, his first marriage having ended in divorce. Perhaps he wanted to be closer to other family members in the area. There he married Maria Provost Finch on 19 April 1884. During his residence in Elsie, Sherman Eddy served on the village council and also as village treasurer. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, and served as their secretary for 22 years.

Other Eddy family members who lived in Elsie were brothers Reuben and Ira, also cousin Charles.
