Sue Carol Evans Born: Fort Knox, Kentucky Sept. 26, 1942; passed: Gig Harbor, Washington July 20, 2015. While living in the Tacoma, Washington area, Sue worked for various legal firms before moving on to become an Executive Secretary to an officer of the Hill Haven Corporation, this position lasted four years, when she applied for and landed the job of Hearings Reporter for the Hearings Examiner for the City of Tacoma where she worked for twenty five years before retiring. Sue was active in her children's lives, being a Camp Fire leader, Cub Scout leader, and Soccer Mom, taking the girls all over Washington and British Columbia. Sue was the ultimate party planner for all the children's birthdays, Halloween, and Christmas, at times having 35 to 40 kids attend. In addition she always planned and had large family gatherings on all the major holidays. When we built the cabin at Maggie Lake in 1976, she hosted many, many outings for the children and their many friends, so many great memories from the events at the lake especially the opening day of fishing season and the kids fishing derby. Sue loved the cabin and the alone time we spent, where she could relax and rejuvenate before getting back to the real world. She never went back after we sold the property in 2008. Sue retired from the City of Tacoma after 25 years of service. In retirement Sue stayed very active, especially after our move to Gig Harbor in 2005. She was active in the "Navy League," "Dine In Group," "First Friday Group" as well as pinochle and Bunco clubs. Her main focus for the past 18 years has been the American Cancer Society 's "Relay For Life ." In the beginning she was team captain for the City of Tacoma's team and held that position for 9 years. Moving to Gig Harbor, she immediately volunteered to be on the event committee and served in various positions for the past 9 years. She only left the committee when her own battle with cancer left her too fatigued to perform her duties. Sue fought CML "Chronic Myeloid Leukemia," for over 10 years and Breast Cancer that metastasized to the bone for the final 5 years of her life. On her last Relay on June 12th of this year she had to leave early due to extreme fatigue, which was very painful for her as this was the only time in 18 years that she did not spend the night with her team. As an aside, Sue raised, on her own during those 18 years, over $75,000.00 for cancer research and was the top individual fundraiser for the 2015 Gig Harbor Relay For Life . Sue also volunteered for the Salvation Army Giving tree at the Tacoma Mall for many years. Sue was predeceased by her parents, Thurman and Eliza Abbott, and her beloved son Steven Evans. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Relay For Life or a charity of your choice.
