Erwin Abmeyer Dies at age of 78
Erwin Abmeyer, 78, a Northeast Kansas horticulturist from Wathena, Kan., died Thursday afternoon, June 30, 1988, at a St. Joseph hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Abmeyer was born at Grantville, Kan. He married the former Carrie Jensen at Meridan, Kan., on June 9, 1934. She survives of the Wathena home.
He was a graduate of the School of Horticulture at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. He served one year as county agent in Douglas County, Kan.
In January 1935, Mr. Abmeyer was named superintendent of the Northeast Kansas Experimental Fields for Kansas State University, a position he held until his retirement in 1983.
Mr. Abmeyer attended the Wathena Methodist Church and was a member of the Kansas Horticultural Society and the Pony Express Historical Association in St. Joseph. He was a volunteer at Patee House Museum.
Additional survivors: two daughters, Mary Chilcote, St. Joseph; and Anna Belle Pugh, Maynard, Mass.; three brothers, Arno Abmeyer, Peoria, Ill.; R.H. Abmeyer, Tulsa, Okla.; and Walter Abmeyer, Topeka, Kan.; and four grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Harman Funeral Home, Wathena. Burial Belmont Cemetery, Wathena.
Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Friends may call after 6 tonight at the funeral home.
