He was a teacher and a principal for Kanawha County schools with 44 years' service, having last served as principal at Kenton Elementary, Elkview. He was a member of Clendenin Masonic Lodge 126 AF&AM and an Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Garnett "Millie" Derrick; parents, William and Hester Young Derrick; brothers, Wyatt and Billy Derrick; and a sister, Louise Hoover.
Surviving: son, John Derrick of Elkview; daughters, Wilma Kay Derrick Hanger of The Woodlands, Texas, and Frances Horton of Arlington, Va.; brothers, Chester Derrick of Charleston, W.Va., Otis Derrick of Charleston, S.C., and James Derrick of California; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
