James was born on his father’s farm in Boones Creek area of Washington Co., TN. He was the eldest son and married Fanny Mabry before 1808, first child Thomas was born in 1809.

She is the daughter of George and Mary Lacky Mabry. Her husband’s mother Winnifred is her aunt, thus making James marrying his 1st cousin.

Her brother Joseph owned 1,000 acres in Beaver Ridge and sold 450 acres to James in 1817. James was the executor of his brother in law, Joseph Mabry, estate.

At one point James owned over 1,000 acres in Beaver Ridge. Land location of the original 780 ac started at the top Copper Ridge near Anderson Co., TN line, west of present day Copper Ridge Road. South following Beaver Creek through Westbridge Business Park to intersection at Hardin Valley Road. The foundation of his old mill can be viewed from the bridge at Garrison Rd crossing Beaver Creek

James and Fanny had nine known children. No cemetery records found likely buried on family farm or unmarked graves at Old Beaver Ridge Cemetery.
