FUNERAL OF G. C. JONES HELD IN SALEM CHAPEL.
Funeral services for Lieut. Commander G C Jones, brother of Wallace Jones and Mrs. A E Austin, both Woodburn residents, were held in Salem yesterday afternoon. He had died August 15 at San Juan, Perto Rico.
He is also survived by his widow Bernice Corrie of Corvallis and two brothers, Elton B and J B Jones, both of Portland.
Rev E B Hart, pastor of the First Baptist church of Corvallis, officiated. Burial was in Pioneer cemetery on French Prairie near the graves of other members of the pioneer Jones family.
George Clay Jones was born on French Prairie June 20, 1890. He began school in District No. 13 and later attended Portland schools, graduating from Lincoln high school. In 1913 he completed an engineering course at OAC and a few years later entered the U. S Coast and Geodetic survey service.
During the first world war he was stationed at Manila Philippine Islands where on a subsequent assignment, he was given distinguished recognition by the Japanese government for the rescue of a shipwrecked crew of Jan___ese. In 1939 on the way home from Alaskan water he found the Chinese __unk Tai Ping, furnished it with the necessary supplies and set it on it course to Seattle.
He belonged to Kappa Sigma fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity. Later he became a m ember of blue lodge No. 1 of the Masonic order, Philippine Islands, Mizpah chapter of the Eastern Star at St.Helens, the Order of Sojourners and Heroes of Washington D.C, the Woodmen of the World of Portland, and the Propeller club of San Juan.
Death was caused by a heart attack at Puerto Rico, where he was in charge of the US Coast and Geodetic observatory.
