The person who christened the sheltered home of the Jones family "THE NOOK". The title still used today.
Rachel was 13 when the family reached the end of the Oregon trail.
The four oldest Jones children were schooled in a private school in Glenwood, near Oregon City. Their school master became president of McMinnville College. He was their pastor as well.
Rachel taught school at Waconda and Bethel. Boys on one side of the room, girls on the other, each facing the walls in opposite directions. They dared not look the other direction. Rachel was paid $5 per student for 3 months of teaching.
She married William B. Fain in 1863. They made their home in Portland.
Her first child May was born July 6, 1854 in Portland. Her other child Alma was born September 28, 1865 at "The Nook" where Rachel was staying with her sister, Sue.
Four months after Alma's birth, Rachel passed away and was buried next to her brother Willie in this cemetery. Willie's grave was the first grave to establish this cemetery.
The children were raised by their grandparents, S.W.R. & Elizabeth Jones. They gave Rachel six grandchildren:
May married Thomas Colton Smith on November 13, 1884 in Idaho Territory. Children: Elvira Fain Smith (1885); Sidney Ellis Smith (1887), Lois Irene Smith (1889) and Elmer Cyril Smith(1894). They lived in Palouse City, Washington.
Alma married George H. Morgan August 11, 1885. Children: Donald Fain Morgan (1886) and Gladys Morgan(1891). They lived in Portland.
