David Dayton was one of the first settlers of Hadley, moving there circa 1796 from the Cambridge area. He located on Lot 10 of the Dartmouth Patent. This property is located along the west side of the Hudson River heading towards Stony Creek.

Before the 1900's, Dayton cemetery was located on this property. The remains and gravestones from the cemetery were removed to the Lake Luzerne cemetery on 26 Oct. 1926 as a part of an Electic Utility project which was to dam the Hudson and flood the Dayton homestead. The project never got off the ground. Today, there is a square "island" of uncleared land in the middle of a field on the property. This undisturbed land is a lasting memorial of the location of the Dayton Cemetery.

The re-interment for some of the individuals were as follows: David and wife Chloe were removed by permission of Judd Dayton. Joel and wife Jane DAYTON Pomeroy were removed by permission of Judd, a grandson. Chloe Jane DAYTON Pomeroy was removed by permission of Judd, a nephew. Telim and wife (Lucinda FLETCHER Dayton) were removed by permission of Louis, a grandson.
