My dear Gary was placed at rest with military honors on Tuesday, July 28, finally at peace after a difficult battle with cancer. He considered it an honor to be at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in the company of fellow veterans and their families. Offered at his service, were words of prayer and peace and the hymn he loved the most. He was a church choir director over 30 years, sang and had countless wonderful pieces in his repertoire, but over the years, "He Leadeth Me" became "his" hymn.

From Prayers for Peace:

For the peace gained from the love and memory of parents and grandparents, we thank You...
For the peace gained from the love and memory of spouses and children, we thank You...
For the peace gained from the kindness and support of friends, we thank You...
For the peace gained when the music of God is sung, we thank You... Amen

He Leadeth Me

1. He leadeth me, O blessed thought! O words with heavenly comfort fraught!
Whate'er I do, where'er I be, Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
2. Sometimes 'mid scenes of deepest gloom, Sometimes where Eden's flowers bloom,
By waters still, o'er troubled sea, Still is his hand that leadeth me.
4. And when my task on Earth is done, When, by Thy grace, the victory's won,
E'en death's cold wave I will not flee, Since God through Jordan leadeth me.

Refrain (normally sung between verses)

He leadeth me, He leadeth Me! By His own hand he leadeth me!
His faithful follower I would be, For by His hand he leadeth me.

He was proud of his service in the U.S. Army Band overseas, of his service as an elementary teacher and principal, of his many years as a church choir director, and of his degrees from UCSB and USC. He was very proud to be part of the USC Trojan Family.

He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, his three children, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many saddened by his passing. He was an only child and is linked to his parents here.

UPDATE: We always found songs for each other. This one from the new Beauty & the Beast.

How does a moment last forever?
How can a story never die?
It is love we must hold onto;
Never easy but we try.

Sometimes our happiness is captured.
Somehow a time and place stand still.
Love lives on inside our hearts
And always will.
