GALENA, KANSAS: Bertha Marie Holbert Edwards, age 82, passed away at her home Thursday, July 16, 2015 following an illness.
Mrs. Edwards was born December 27, 1932 in Baxter Springs, KS.
Her parents were Benjamin and Sarah Alberta (Riley) Holbert.
She was raised in Baxter Springs graduating from Baxter High School.
As a young woman, she was active in Mt Olive Baptist Church, Baxter Springs.
Sixty years ago she moved to Galena. She continued her education at Pittsburg State University where she later earned a Masters degree in Education.
She also became an active member of Mt Zion Baptist Church, Galena. In later years, Bertha worshipped again at Mt Olive, Baxter Springs.
She retired as the 5th and 6th grades school teacher in Galena USD #499, a position she held for 28 years. She last worked in Home Health Care.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, Delta Sigma Theta, Dean of Christian Education for the Southeast District.
Among her interests were knitting, reading, collecting quotations, and caring for houseplants.
Surviving is one son, Richard L Edwards Jr. (wife, Michael), Golden Valley, MN; two daughters, Michelle Edwards (husband, James Barnes), and Melody Edwards all from Wichita, KS; two brothers, Harvey Crowder, Punta Gorda, FL and Eugene “Gene” Crowder, Las Vegas, NV; three grandsons, Ryan Edwards, Christopher Edwards, and Kellen Clark, several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Edward Crowder, and one sister, Ernestine Lomax.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Friday, July 24, 3015 at Mt Olive Baptist Church, Baxter Springs. Rev. Leroy Nelson will officiate.
Burial will be in Baxter Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.
