Rochester-June 30 - Relatives returned today from North Liberty today where they attended the funeral services for Chester C. Clemans, aged 52, whose body was found hanging form a hay fork trip rope in the barn at his residence on rural route 2, Walkerton, Thursday. Burial was in North Liberty cemetery. Dr. F. Daye Nelson, St. Joseph county coroner, ruled suicide in the death of Mr. Clemans. He set the time of death at about 8 a.m. Tuesday. The body was found Thursday by a neighbor, Melvin Gouker, Jr., 16, whom Mrs. Clemans had telephoned from South Bend to ask him to notify her husband to call her in South Bend where she had just returned from a visit with relatives in Albuquerque, N.M.
Clemans was born March 11, 1899 in Rochester, IN. and had been employed as an assembler in the Bendix plant in South Bend since 1941. He had worked there Monday. Police who investigated said Clemans apparently had climbed up on a tractor and jumped off to take his life.
Surviving are Clemans' wife Mattie; a son, Chester, Jr., South Bend; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Bennett, Osceola; four stepchildren and a brother, Arthur C. Clemans, South Bend.
