At the age of 17 Harriet married a prominent NSW surgeon, an ex convict named Charles Herfurth(aka Carl Hoffhold). Tragically her husband died the following year, followed a few months later by their infant son.
Harriet remarried in 1821, aged 20, to James Shepherd, a missionary to the Maoris in New Zealand. They were married by the Rev. Samuel Marsden at St John's Church, Parramatta, Sydney.
Together they devoted their lives to missionary service, initially in the Bay of Islands, then later establishing a mission at Waitangi, Whangaroa Harbour. Harriet bore James 13 children.
