Roy S. Knight, a longtime St. Helena resident who developed the first vineyard drip system in Napa County, died Saturday at St. Helena Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He was 74.
Mr. Knight was born on Nov. 13, 1912, in Lane County, Oregon, to Asa Lee and Mabel Lyons Knight.
At age 9, he moved with his family to California, eventually moving to the Napa Valley in 1926.
Mr. Knight married Dorothy Barnett in 1930 in Ukiah.
They lived first in Fort Bragg, then in Humboldt County before moving to their St. Helena ranch 48 years ago.
Mr. Knight worked seven years at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and 10 years for Napa County Road Construction.
He developed and installed the first vineyard drip system in Napa County in the 1960s and since that time worked in the vineyard industry. He retired in 1978.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Mr. Knight is survived by his wife, Dorothy of St. Helena; three sons, Robert Leroy of Napa, Dan Louis of Middletown and James V. of Ashland, Ore.; two daughters, Alice Mabel Lippert of Willows and Rosemary Ann Allin of Ashland, Ore.; three brothers, Lee of Clio, and William and Larry, both of Ashland, OR; two sisters, Dolores Daniels of St. Helena and Dorthea Collier of Clio; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren ; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and a brother.
Funeral services were held today at Morrison Funeral Chapel in St. Helena. Entombment was private at Tulocay Cemetery.
