He leaves a family of several adult children, his wife having died about 20 years ago. The children are: Ellen, living in Kansas; Glandara, Phoebe, Jacob A., Iva. M., Isaac G., Charles G., James E., Lewis J., Flora F. and Mary M.
He was born in Franklin county, Pa., in 1830, his mother dying when he was 4 years old. In his youth he was bound out to a farmer, and at 21 left him with nothing but his determination and strong body to engage in life's struggle.
In 1850 he went to Malcom county, Ill., in 1851 to Burlington, and in 1852 married Mary J. Abbott, and the next year bought 80 acres in Louisa county. In 1855 he moved to a 100 acre farm in Davis county and in 1866 to Appanoose county, where he acquired considerable property and a good farm. He was a man of strong religious convictions, a devoted Methodist, a worker for its welfare, a staunch whig and later republican, and in the home a good father and in the community a good citizen.
The funeral was Thursday afternoon, interment at Jerome.
