A Leutnant zur See and pilot with the Marine-Fliegerabteilung operating from Seeflugstation Zeebrügge, he was shot down during a mission over the Thames estuary on 9 July 1917 and captured. He subsequently died in Dartford Hospital from bronchopneumonia on the 3 November 1918 and was buried on 9 November in grave 377 at the Metropolitan Asylums' Board Cemetery, Upper Southern Hospital, Dartford.

His next of kin was listed as Oberleutnant Thomsen, Charlottenburg, Giesebrechtstraße.
