In the death of Dr. Carl Neubert, one of the oldest citizens of Belleville, who passed away at his home, 15 North Jackson street, at 9 o'clock Wednesday night, this city has sustained the loss of one of its most prominent and highly-respected citizens. Dr. Carl Neubert, during his career as a citizen of Belleville, was beloved by all who knew him. He was the possessor of an amicable and pleasant disposition, which made him an esteemed friend with all whom he came in contact with.

During his residence in this city he practiced medicine, and part of the time was employed as a writer on various German papers in Belleville. As a journalist Dr. Neubert was and always worked for the welfare of the city, never fearing to tell the truth and at all times ready to stand for what he had written. He was employed by the "Belleville Zeitung" and the Volksblatt" and was foundre of the "Der Treubund" which he conducted for many years.

As an orator, Dr. Neubert was far above the average, and he was during the early political campaigns one of the foremost orators. His services were also greatly demanded on festive occasions, and his oratorical efforts are still pleasantly remembered by the older residents of Belleville.

Dr. Carl Neubert was born December 16, 1818, in Coburg, Germany, and was therefore over 83 years of age. His father, Friedrich Neubert, gave the son a thorough and complete education. At the age of 19 years the deceased entered a homeopathic college to study medicine. After graduating, he entered the homeopathic hospital of Dr. Arthur Lutze as assistant physician.

On September 15, 1842, Dr. Neubert was married to Miss Eva Matilda Lauguth, with whom, in the year 1892, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. His wife died about six years ago. In the year 1848, during the revolution in Germany, he established a paper in Coburg, the "Coburger Tageblatt," and became its chief editor. Dr. Neubert was one of the many German liberalists who were compelled to flee from the country to escape imprisonment in 1848.

In the year 1853 Dr. Neubert sailed for America, settling in Philadelphia, where he remained for several years. After that he spent several years in Scranton, Pa., and in New York City, in each place practicing his profession.

On December 18, 1857, the deceased came to Belleville, since which time he has continuously resided here. He served one term as City Clerk of Belleville, and was a deputy under County Clerk Sebastian Fietsam.

Dr. Neubert was one of the founders of the Order of Trebund and the Philharmonic Society. He was also an honorary member of the Kronthal Liedertafel. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with his children, Miss Emily and Prof. Gustav Neubert, director of the Philharmonic Society and the Kronthal Liedertafel. Besides these, he also leaves two sons in St. Louis, Dr. Adolph and Carl Neubert.

The funeral will take place at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon to Walnut Hill Cemetery.
