Alvin Merril Brazell, born at home on Feb. 3, 1928, in Tolar, Hood County, passed from this world on Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at home in Duncanville.
Graveside service: in Stroud Creek Cemetery.
Al's grandmother, Mary Susan Evaline Brown, came to Hood County in 1870 by wagon train. She and her family settled near Tolar on land now known as the Raburn place. She still lived on that land when she died in 1960, and that is where Al was born. Al's life eventually took him away from Tolar, but it was always on his mind. He had many fond memories of growing up in Hood County, often recalling fun times there with his sisters, cousins and friends. He received his formal education from Tolar public schools. As a young man, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army. Upon completion of boot camp, he was assigned to Gen. Douglas MacArthur's honor guard in Tokyo, Japan, where he remained for his entire service. He served from April 1947 through April 1950. Al married Darlene Penn in November 1953. They settled in the Dallas area and raised two daughters. In 1963 they purchased a home in the Fairmeadows subdivision of Duncanville and made their home there for many years. For most of his career, Al was a machinist for Jetco in Grand Prairie. He retired in 1985 and he and Darlene moved to Midland to be near their oldest daughter. There they became active members of the Midland Suburban Lions Club, where Al held various offices, including "Tail Twister" and president. Al also volunteered with VAN-Serving The Visually Impaired, and with Community and Senior Services of Midland. Al and Darlene returned to Duncanville in 2003, settling near their youngest daughter. They quickly became involved in the Duncanville Noon Lions Club, serving on many community projects. He was a member of First Christian Church, Duncanville. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin M. Brazell and Margaret Dumas Brazell; and his sister, Beatrice Sutherland. Survivors: His loving wife of 61 years, Darlene Penn Brazell; daughters, Pattie Orr and Kim Trusty; sons-in-law, Stephen Orr and Michael Trusty; granddaughters, Ivy Orr Hamerly and Kristin Trusty Bukovec; grandsons-in-law, Gregory Hamerly and Daniel Bukovec; great-grandsons, Luke Ansel Hamerly, Eric Stephen James Hamerly and Elijah Miroslav Bukovec; sisters, Betty Brazell Kizer, Pauline Brazell Oakes and Donna Brazell Chapman; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
