Jerome Lyle Thompson, 82, of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Columbus, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2015.

A Celebration of Life service will be held July 17, 2015, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at South St Olaf Cemetery south of Larson. Cremation has taken place.

Jerome was born on the family farm in McHenry County to Oscar and Mena (Oslie) Thompson on Feb. 1, 1933. He was raised on the farm with his parents and four siblings; Margaret, Lorraine, Orlin and Mona. Jerome was baptized and confirmed at Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva. At a young age, Jerome decided that he wanted to make his living with his head, not his hands. So when he graduated from Velva High School, he enrolled in Concordia College in Moorehead, Minn. After a short time there, he decided to join the Army. He served his country and returned home, enrolling into Minot State Teacher's College. He graduated from there in 1957 with a bachelor of arts degree. He went on to start his teaching career in Columbus. During this time spent summers in Greeley, Colo., where he received his master's degree in educationl administration in 1960. Later that summer, on August 28, he married the love of his life, Delores Holte. He continued on at Columbus High School as principal and teaching for several years. Jerome and Delores had two children, Boyd and Dawn.

His career took him to a variety of places: Glasgow, Mont.; Bagley, Minn.; LaCrescent, Minn.; Mandaree; Dunseith; and Tempe/Mesa, Ariz.

He and his family made wonderful memories and had many adventures. Jerome often spoke of his teaching career with great fondness and let everyone know he was content with the choices that he made in his life. He was proud of his family, took every opportunity to share stories, to make memories and to share his wisdom and love.

Jerome was an active man. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, walking, but mostly, playing with his grandchildren. He enjoyed life to its fullest, always taking the time that was needed with everyone. There was always time for a cup of coffee and a chat. And a smile and laugh were considered contagious by anyone within earshot. Jerome was an avid reader. He carried a book with him wherever he went. If he had a moment, he would read. He never stopped learning throughout his life and instilled that trait in his family. Jerome served on several church councils over the years; was a charter member of Lions Club; was a member of NDEA; member of Toastmasters and Rotary Club; and most recently was an active member of the Scandinavian Club in Sun Lakes.

Jerome was a kind man with a gentle nature and he will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Mena, his sisters, Margaret and Lorraine and his son Boyd.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Delores; daughter, Dawn (Kurt) Koppelsloen; brother, Orlin (Helen) Thompson; sister, Mona Skar; grandchildren, Disa, Dani, and Koby Koppelsloen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jerome will be remembered in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him.

Stakston-Martin Funeral Home of Crosby is in charge of arrangements.
