Mona Skar, 88, Minot, formerly of McGregor and Velva, died on Monday, January 27, 2020 in a Minot nursing home from heart failure.

Mona Mae Skar was born on February 2, 1931 to Oscar and Mena (Oslie) Thompson in Velva, ND. She was raised on a farm three miles north of Velva, educated in Velva, graduated from Velva High School in 1949 and as a Registered Nurse from Trinity School of Nursing in 1952. She began her employment with Trinity Hospital for two years before moving on to Denver, Los Angeles, Stamford, CT and Minneapolis before returning to Velva to care for her mother.

Mona was united in marriage to Thorstein O. Skar on October 12, 1974 at Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva. They made their home on a farm in Stoneview Township of Divide County near McGregor, ND where they raised small grains and cattle.

Thorstein died on February 11, 1996. Later that summer, Mona moved to Minot where she had since resided. Most recently she had been a resident of the Dakota Terrace Apartments and The Wellington.

Mona was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva and a former member of the Zion Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aide in McGregor as well as the Tioga Quilting Club. She attended Bread of Life Lutheran Church in Minot. She enjoyed traveling, reading, puzzles and quilting but was passionate about caring for her family and friends with visits, phone calls and her nursing knowledge and skills.

Mona is survived by her sisters-in-law: Helen Thompson of Reno, NV, Delores Thompson of Sun Lakes, AZ and Sally Harvey of Lakeland FL; nephews: Terry (Eileen) Thompson and Mark Harness and nieces: Mary Harness, Laurel (Cary) Lindstrom, Rachel (Steve) Thoroughman, Dawn (Kurt) Koppelsloen, Orlyn Anne (Frank) Schenk, Susan Karlgaard Sartain and Shari Karlgaard Garrett and numerous grand nieces and grand nephews.

Mona was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters: Margaret (Emil) Harness and Lorraine Thompson, brothers: Orlin and Jerome Thompson and nephew, Boyd Thompson.
