PARENTS: James Victor Brady and Margaret Ethel Tanner.

PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS: James S. Brady & Ella Eakin, both b. Penn.

MATERNAL GR-GRANDPARENTS: ? & Julia A. Eakin (maiden name unknown).

The Brady Family moved to Azalea, Oregon, in 1921, and he has lived in the Cow Creek Valley for most of his 97 years.

Donald married Doris Beverly Fair on August 17, 1940, in Roseburg, Oregon, and raised their three daughters, Donna Beverly Doescher, Margaret Evalyn Cooper, and Susan Elizabeth Satre, in the home which he and Doris built in 1946, with logs sawn from the mill they owned.

Donald was the second oldest of the six brothers: Ralph, Lewis, Gene, Gerald, Kenneth , and one sister, Edith Brady Forman. Most of the brothers worked for Brady Lumber Co. at various times during their younger years.

His father was killed in a logging accident in 1929. His mother remarried in 1934, and his three half brothers, Larry Hill, Walter (Punk) Hill, and Bill Hill were born.

His mother died in an automobile accident in 1964, and when his oldest brother was also killed in a logging accident in 1954, he became the patriarch of the Brady family and was viewed as a second father by his younger siblings.

Donald was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Melissa Austin Hughey, in November 1997.

He is survived by his three daughters; grandchildren Bret West and Christine, Kerwin West and Marla, Candace Worley and Keith, Everett Worley and Annette, James Austin and Teresa; his three great grandchildren Eric Austin, Chante’ Phay, and Keenan West; and four great-great grandchildren.

Donald operated a bulldozer when the I-5 freeway was built through the valley in the 1950s and for most of his life he was self-employed, with his wife Doris working by his side. In his retirement years, he and Doris lived on Prince of Whales [Wales] Island, Alaska, where he drove off-road logging trucks. He and Doris enjoyed fishing, beach combing and rock hunting on their many travels. They returned to Azalea, where he passed away on the property they purchased from his mother and stepfather in 1940.

He was a member of the Azalea Grange #786, which he helped build as a young man, for 83 years. He was an inspiration to his daughters and the male role model for his grandchildren. We were blessed to have him.
