Valeda Swensen Hilton, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother was born December 2, 1920 in Hinckley, Utah. She passed away peacefully on June 25, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 94. Valeda married Ross Cropper Hilton on June 9, 1941 in the LDS Manti Temple.
Eldest in her family, she took on many parental responsibilities of her siblings in her young life on the farm in Hinckley, Utah. She loved to serve her family and church as well as in the community. She served in many church callings such as: Relief Society, Sunday School and the Young Women’s organizations. She was active in the Lady Faculty of the Southern Utah University. Valeda was an avid gardener with her husband, Ross. They would share their produce with family and friends. She canned fruits and vegetables and her famous chili sauce. All of the family especially loved the raspberry freezer jam she made from their own patch!
She loved flowers and grew many in her beautiful yard, especially roses, which were her favorite. In 1980 she won the Salt Lake Tribune Civic Beautification Regional Award, for all her hard work. Valeda loved to crochet. Family and friends all enjoyed receiving her crocheted snowflakes at Christmas time. She also enjoyed baking and decorating cakes. She loved to write poems and has compiled a collection of her poems in a book entitled “Reflections of Our Lives”.
Valeda was a big support to her husband, Ross in his many, many years of scouting endeavors. Valeda’s family and the gospel of Jesus Christ were the center of her life. She was a member of the LDS Cedar 8th Ward and Las Vegas Meadows 5th Ward.
Valeda is survived by son-in-law Verd Singleton of Benjamin, Utah, her children Glen Hilton (Cathy) of Las Vegas, Nevada, Raymond Hilton (Julie) of Bountiful, Utah, Jeanette Nelson (Cal) of Las Vegas, Nevada, 20 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren, brother Neal Swensen (Carma) of Sandy, Utah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Cropper Hilton, brothers Lawrence Swensen, Carl Swensen, Reed Swensen, and her sisters Rowena Anderson, Melba Jean Crowley and her daughter, Rosalee Singelton.
There will be a viewing Thursday, July 2, 2015 at the Hinckley LDS Chapel (188 North Main Street, Hinckley, Utah) from 10:30 am to 12 noon, with funeral service following at 12:30 pm Interment will be at the Hinckley Cemetery directly following the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
