In Memoriam
With the passing of Miss Claudena Eckles on March 18, 1953, South Side lost one of its most beloved teachers. Miss Eckles came to South Side when it opened in 1923, and for some years taught choral music and in addition directed the band and the orchestra. She herself was a fine musician, and while head of the music department, successfully produced a number of operettas. In more recent years she taught mathematics.

Miss Eckles had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and among the schools where she had studied were West Tennessee State Teachers College, Peabody College at Nashville, Sienna College, and the University of Mexico at Mexico City. She was interested in perfecting her Spanish and spent one summer studying at Saltillo, Mexico. A member of the "Lega Panaermicana," she was well known for the programs and music and other plays which she presented to the society.

Sponsor for the senior class at South Side, she assisted at the social functions and other class projects.

Miss Eckles had that quality of all great teachers. She was so much more than just a teacher of subject matter, for she shared with her students not only a knowledge of mathematics, but she tried to develop in them self-discipline and an appreciation of music and other fine things in life.

She will long be remembered by her pupils and faculty associates.

Her will was admitted to Probate on March 26 1953. She left everything to her sister, Margaret I. Godfrey.
