Étienne (Stephen) I (1065–1102), Count Palatine of Burgundy, shared his father's nickname "Tête-Hardi (the stubborn)". He was Count of Burgundy, Mâcon and Vienne.

Born into a powerful and influential family, he was the son of Count Guillaume (William) I of Burgundy and his wife Étiennette (Stephanie). He and his brothers Raimond and Hugues called themselves sons of the "most noble count William" in a late-11th century document.

His siblings were
---Eudes, who died before 1087,
---Guillaume, who died before 1090,
---Renaud II, Count of Burgundy, who married Regina [Kuniza] von Oltingen, and died on the First Crusade,
---Raimond, who married Urraca of León and Castile and thus inherited the government of Galicia (Spain),
---Guy, Archbishop of Vienne,
---Hugues, Archbishop of Besançon,
---Ermentrude, who married Thierry de Mousson,
---Sybilla (aka Maud), who married (1080) Eudes I of Burgundy,
---Gisèla of Burgundy, who married (1090) Humbert II of Savoy and (2nd) Renier I of Montferrat,
---Étiennette, who married Lambert Francois de Valence (Seigneur de Royans, de Peyrins et de Chabeuil), and
---Clementia, who married Robert II, Count of Flanders and was regent, during his absence(she married secondly Godfrey I, Count of Leuven),
---Berthe, who married Alfonso VI, King of Castile & Leon in December 1094. (Berthe is listed as a possible daughter of Guillaume I and Etiennette by the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy)

Étienne succeeded in 1087 as Comte de Mâcon, Seigneur de Varasque. He was regent of Bourgogne-Comté during the absence of his older brother, Renaud, on the First Crusade. Renaud died in the Holy Land, leaving Étienne to succeed to the rule of Bourgogne-Comté in 1097. After Renaud's death, he himself joined the Crusade.

In 1101, he participated in the capture of Ancyra. He commanded troops with Étienne, Comte de Blois; they were defeated by the Turks in the disastrous Battle of Mersivan, from whence he barely escaped.

William of Tyre records the presence at the second capture of Tortosa in 1102 of "Stephanus comes Burgundiæ". Étienne died the same year, aged 37. Albert of Aix records that "Conradus, Arpinus, Stephanus Blesensis itemque Stephanus de Burgundia" were captured at Ramla after being burned in a tower, and that "Stephano itemque Stephano" were beheaded (at Ascalon), dated to mid-1102 from the context.

He was married to Béatrix of Lorraine, daughter of Gerard, Duke of Lorraine and Hedwige of Namur. Béatrix died in 1116/1117.

Their children were:

---Isabella, who married Hugues, Count of Champagne; he later renounced her and their son, Eudes,
---Renaud III,his eldest son & successor,
---Guillaume III of Mâcon,
---Clémence/Marguerite (died 1164), who married Guigues IV d'Albon, Dauphin de Viennois. They were the parents of Guigues V d'Albon.
