Down the trail came Joseph Bailly on his first trip to the Calumet region. When he arrived at the ravine where the trail swung south he was probably struck by the beauty of the hill above him, so he went around it to the west side, where there was another smaller ravine running north-west from near the top of the hill. Near the upper end of this ravine was a cool spring, and on the west bank about 50 feet down was an oak tree. Being tired and thirsty, he drank and rested in the shade of this oak tree. The spring is gone, but the tree still stands in a fairly good state of preservation.
Joseph build the first know two story log cabin as the Old Bailly Homestead and Trading Post, near Chesterton, where he traded furs etc., with the Indians.
