David H. Best, Jr, 92, of Montgomery, Alabama, died on June 20, 2015 in Montgomery. He grew up in Ensley, Alabama and graduated from Ensley High School. He attended Auburn University and ran on the varsity track team. Following two years at Auburn, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, served in World War II, and was awarded the Victory Medal. The U.S. Navy sent him to The University of Illinois where he was again a member of the varsity track team. He graduated in 1945. He began working for Southern Bell, later South Central Bell. He worked in various capacities throughout the years and culminated with his retirement as a District Engineer. Following retirement, he started his own engineering consulting business. He also spent ten years building houses for Habitat for Humanity. He served his community in various capacities as a member and past president of the Anniston Civitan Club and was a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Sylacauga, Alabama. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Anniston, Alabama and for the last seven years, he was a member of Frazer United Methodist Church in Montgomery. He was a devoted choir member at both churches. He was also a lifetime member of the Auburn University Alumni Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann (Sprague) Best; and his parents, David H. Best Sr. and Sally Vernon (Smith) Best. He is survived by three daughters, one son, ten grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral: 11:00 a.m. on June 26, 2015 at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel in Golden Springs. Interment: 3:00 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
