John was born near Marietta in Lancaster County. He married Barbara Whitmer of Lancaster County and they immigrated to what is known as the Leonard farm near McAlisterville in 1814. John died April 16, 1846. Barbara died July 24, 1840. John was a Whig. There are a number of sketches of the this family in Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata and Perry County History which is in two volumes, Vol. I page 178, also Vol. II, pages 692 and 978, submitted by Mrs. Ardella A. Ebersole, 1510 Zarker Street, Harrisburg, PA.

A SHORT SKETCH OF THE BOOK FAMILY;
Given in a very brief but interesting manner by one of the Immediate Family.
The early history of the Book family is largely traditional but it is known that they came from Germany and time of emigration is unknown, but an effort is being made to discover the facts by an examination of the old English emigrant records.
The authentic history, as taken from the Old German Bible, now in possession of Martha S. Book of Walker Twp., and in which the records are made in German, begins with the birth of John Book, April 17, 1774. This was one year and two days before the first contest in arms between the Continentals and Englis at Lexington and over two years before the Declaration of American Independence. John Book was born near Marietta, Lancaster, was married to Barbara Whitmer of Lancaster County and they immigrated to what is known as the Leonard farm near McAlisterville in 1814. He died April 16, 1846. His wife was born Aril 14, 1777, died July 24, 1840. This union was blessed by ten children, Jacob Book born March 13, 1801, died September 24, 1802; Elizabeth Book Price, born Oct. 24, 1903; Abraham Book, born august 29, 1804, died 1888; John Book, born May 1 1806, died may 1882; Samuel Book, born April 12, 1811; Martha Book, born Feb. 14, 1814, died Dec. 2 1897; Hester Book Keefer, born Feb. 26, 1815, died 1900; Henry Book, born Oct 28, 1817, died 1901.
These grandparents being of the strong German stock, sober, honest and intensely religious, their seed like that of Abraham has multiplied until like the sands of the seashore, they cannot be counted and their prosperity has spread over the grater length and breadth of the country, but an effort is being made to enumerate the connection.
