Brenda was the second child born to her parents, whose home was in the tiny post office community of Orient Hill. Her brother was three years older than she.
In 1953, a few days after her second birthday--and on Fathers' Day--her parents took their children to a nearby "swimming hole", a clean water-cooled natural depression in the hilly land near their small home, for what promised to be a few hours of fun and play.
Tragically, during that afternoon, her father suddenly died. Unbeknownst to the toddler, her unborn sister was also to die before her birth--an apparent result of the terrible shock of her father's death.
Her mother continued to live with her small children in their tiny house. Brenda grew up in that little Greenbrier County community. She went to school and spent her free time with her many cousins and other playmates. Her mother eventually was able to purchase and remodel another, larger house in the neighbourhood. This house stood on about an acre of land, a mostly level yard that supported a large garden and berry bushes, which provided much food for the three of them.
When she was ready to enter junior high school, Brenda's brother wanted to attend God's Bible School, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Their mother made the difficult decision to leave their home and extended family to take them to the Cincinnati school where she felt they would come under a stable Christian environmental influence. Both children completed high school there.
After Brenda graduated, the family decided to remain near the School. Her mother eventually sold their house in West Virginia, and Cincinnati became their new home.
