Vertie Beulah Hizer Jones, of Cincinnati, a daughter of the late Edward Lee and Betty Clara Fink Hizer, was a remarkable lady from Orient Hill, in Greenbrier County, WV. She was born, grew up, graduated from high school, worked, and established her family in that county.

As a young woman, she was married to Junior Ocie Jones, who preceded her in death on June 21, 1953. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jones suffered the loss of her third child, Geraldine Ocie, who was stillborn several weeks after the death of her father.

Always a loving mother and homemaker, she was devoted to her children, and, alone, gave them a secure and happy life. When her son wanted to enroll in God's Bible School in Cincinnati, she made the huge and very difficult decision to move with her children to the school, leaving her newly remodeled home, her friends, and entire family, indeed, all she had ever known. She believed this step was necessary to provide her children with a sound Christian education at a school where they could also remain within her care and guidance.

Vertie never returned to that house in West Virginia. Rather, she chose to remain in Cincinnati, where she had forged a new and satisfactory life. In her cozy apartment less than a block from the GBS campus, and near long-time friends, Vertie enjoyed the conveniences of urban living.

When she became a grandmother, her joy was complete. Remembered by her grandchildren as their loving Grandma, she doted on each of them.

Prior to their move to Cincinnati, she and her children had attended Orient Hill Tabernacle. In Cincinnati, as a long-time faithful attendee at the First Wesleyan Church, she continued to serve the Lord as long as her physical condition permitted.

Sadly, her later years were not to be lived in the peace and enjoyment of her home and family. Vertie's life was cut short by the same illness that felled a number of her siblings.

Still young, following a long battle with Alzheimer's, throughout which her loving daughter, Brenda, remained near her in unfailing devotion, Vertie at last entered into the presence of her Lord, Whom she had long loved and trusted. She crossed over from Clifton Villa Nursing Home in Cincinnati, on Tuesday, April 21, 1998. She was just three weeks short of her seventy-third birthday.

Surviving: daughter, Brenda Jones Carr, of Cincinnati; son, Edsel Jones, and his wife, Barbara, of Columbia, SC; grandchildren: Cherilyn Jones, of Nashville, TN; Heather Jones, of Columbia; Angelina and J.R. Villafana, of Cincinnati; sisters: Hazel Clark, of Sonora, CA; Chloe Cook, of Quinwood, WV; Helen Walkup, of Leslie, WV; Minnie Walkup, of Rupert, WV; Ethel Pitsenbarger, of Sandusky, OH; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two of her sisters, Beatrice and Gladys, and her three brothers, Ralph, Homer, and Donald.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, W.Va., with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will be in Orient Hill, W.Va.
