The Rev. John William "Bill" Lowe, 87, of Spencer, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Miletree Center, Spencer.
He was born Jan. 4, 1928 in Wellford, a son of the late Willie Madison and Lessie Phillips Lowe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Johnny William Lowe; sisters, Jeminah Lowe, Patricia Lowe, Gatha Payne, Opel Myers, Madelyn Elswick, Maxine Haynes and Faye Gandee; and brothers, William Lowe Jr. and Bobby Lee Lowe.
Rev. Lowe was ordained in 1963 and pastored some area United Methodist churches during the later years of his ministry. Also, he served as the chaplain for American Legion Post 21 and Irvin F. Conley VFW Post 5783, Spencer. He attended Speed United Methodist Church. He was retired from Pennzoil Corporation with 37 years of service. He enlisted the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served for six years.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Jewell Carper Lowe, whom he married Dec. 13, 1951; sons and daughters-in-law, John S. and Freda Lowe of Freeland, Mich., and David and Donna Lowe of Amma; sisters, Betty Graley of South Charleston and Wanda Elswick of Sandyville; grandchildren, Beth Lowe of Clendenin and John David Lowe of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Daniel Whited officiating. Burial with military honors accorded by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and American Legion Post 61, Clendenin, will be in Clover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
