A US citizen and American trained physician, Dr. Butler died of peritonitis at the age of 31. A practicing physician, he was the son of American Presbyterian missionary parents. His father, Dr. George W. Butler, was also a physician, having served Canhotinho, Pernambuco, Brazil before him.

A US citizen, born in Brazil, he was survived by his wife, Mildred Butler, and two minor children, who were in Brazil with him. Also surviving were his mother, Mrs. G. W. Butler, and three sisters of Goldsboro, North Carolina; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Baker of Fredericksburg, VA; and an elder brother and his wife, Dr. George N. Butler, Jr., and Beatrice V. Butler, of Pernambuco, Brazil.
