NEW CASTLE--Herman E. Coffman, 80, of rural New Castle, died Monday, Sept. 23, 1996, at Henry County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 10, 1916, in Falmouth, to Wesley H. and Lora Evelyn Livezy Coffman. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He had lived in Henry County most of his life and was a lifelong farmer in the Millville area.
He was a 1934 graduate of Mays High School. He was a member of Henry County Farm Bureau, Mooreland Masonic Lodge 321, F&AM, Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine in Indianapolis, Henry County Scottish Rite Club, Henry County Shrine Club and Hagerstown American Legion 333.
Survivors include his wife, Savannah "Sue" Shafer Coffman, whom he married May 10, 1947; two sons, Stephen Coffman and Terry Coffman, both of New Castle; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, M. Burton Coffman of Lewisville and Howard Coffman of Knightstown; one sister, Frances Terhune of Lapel; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Coffman, and a sister, Thelma Delay.
Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Macer-Hall Funeral Home, New Castle, with the Rev. Gary Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown, where military rites will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion of Hagerstown. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.
