Matthew Thomas Stevenson, 23, of 113 Woodridge Drive died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at his residence after a two year battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

He was born Dec. 17, 1977, in Peoria to Thomas and Debbie Stevenson.

Surviving are his parents of Dunlap; one sister, Julie Stevenson at home; and two grandmothers, Hazel Carlson of Peoria and Jeannetta Stevenson of Ballwin, Mo.

He was a 1996 graduate of Illinois Valley Central High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the track team. He attended Illinois Central College. He later majored in applied computer science at Illinois State University, where he was on the Dean's list in 1998 and a member of the Golden Key Honor Society.

He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He had worked as a co-op student in the electrical/electronics business unit at Caterpillar Inc. and was a co-op student at State Farm Insurance.

He served as a peer minister in the Wesley Foundation at First United Methodist Church in Normal in 1998 and 2000. He did volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity and also was a volunteer for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Bloomington.

A Boy Scout, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1993.

Private burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
