Mayor Joseph Pratt "Petesy" Barnard, 56, died Sunday (Jan. 1, 2006) at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville, Duval Co, FL following a lengthy illness. A native and lifelong resident of Pierce County, he was the mayor of Patterson. He was a member of Patterson Methodist Church. He was a 1967 graduate of Patterson High School and a 1971 graduate of Georgia Southern University. He was a former boys and girls basketball coach and assistant football coach at Patterson High School and was a coach at Ware County High School. He was a former Recreation Department director for the city of Blackshear. Working with children was his love as it was shown in all he did.

Survivors are his two sons, Reese McKay Barnard of Statesboro and James Rhett Barnard of Patterson; his parents, J.P. and Tiny Martin Barnard of Patterson; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Claire and Duward Boatright of Bristol; a niece, Claire Boatright of Bristol; two nephews, Duward (Nancy) Boatright Jr. and James Barrett Boatright, all of Bristol; a great-nephew, Duward Boatright III of Bristol; several aunts, uncles and cousins and numerous friends.

Funeral for Mayor Barnard will be Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at Patterson Baptist Church. Entombment will be in the Patterson Cemetery at a later time. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 until 9 at the funeral home. The City of Patterson employees, councilmen and police along with former basketball players (men and women) for Patterson High School during 1972, '73 and '74 are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers and are requested to meet at the church by 10:30 Wednesday morning. Memorials may be made to the City of Patterson Cemetery Fund, PO Box 434, Patterson, Ga. 31557.
