John A. Logan was born at Granshaw, Buncrana, near Londenderry, Ireland, September 11, 1847, and passed peacefully awan January 7 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.E. Benson, near Harris. For the past year his health had failed gradually. At the age of fifteen he came to America with an uncle, James McDowell, who placed him in the hands of another uncle, Wm. McDowell, at Rockford, Ill., where he ramained about a year when his uncle was called by death. He then came to Waterloo and for a few years lived with his Uncle James. He was united in marriage at Waterloo to Catherine Agness Murdock December 9, 1870. To them were born nine children, eight of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. A son, William Charles, died in infance. One daughter, Mrs. Agnes Winters preceded her pparents in death in 1899. Mr. Logan lived on a farm near Waterloo until March, 1895, when he moved with his wife and family to a farm near Harris, whre they resided until 1902, when they retired from the farm and moved into Harris. Here they remained until the death of Mrs. Logan. Since that time he has made his home with his children. Mr. amd Mrs. Logan celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 9, 1920. Mr. Logan's parents were members of the Pesbyterian church and he was brought up in that faith. However, he was happy to join and work with the church nearest his household. For a number of years he was a member of the United Brethren Church at Eagle Center, Black Hawk county, Iowa and later united with the Presbyterian church of Harris. He was also always interested in the commuity's welfare.
He leaves to mourn his loss, seven children, May Tritle of Spirit Lake, Maude Benson of Harris, Samuel J. Logan of Minneapolis, Minn., Elizabeth Hatch of Sioux Falls, S.D., George H. Logan of Rochester, Harriet Wilmarth of Ocheyedan, and Daisy McFarland of Harris, sixteen grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.E. Benson, on Thursday, January 10, 1929, at 1:30 p.m. and at the Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the paster, Rev. Robert Grisby. Interment was at Ocheyedan.
