Nancy Byard was born in 1800 and married Jacob Hickman. The couple had five children.

Her husband Jacob died in April 1841, barely three months after their youngest son was born.

Nancy’s age, marriage, and children are documented in the Hickman family bible, in the possession of Robert Bennett, a descendent of Byard's.

"History of Wayne County, IA" contains a biography of Byard Hickman, where he stated his mother was Nancy Byard, originally from Maryland.

The 1850 US Census of Wetzel County, Virginia, taken in August listed Nancy Hickman (age 47) as head of household, no husband, with the following children:
George (21)
Christen (17),
Elizabeth (Cross) (15)
Mary (13)
Byard (10).

Nancy and her oldest son George were listed as illiterate, while the remaining children were listed in school. She owned property worth $150. The census showed her place of birth as Pennsylvania, while her children were all born in Virginia. The children in the census record match those found in the Hickman family bible.

From another findagrave member, it appears Nancy Hickman remarried after 1850 to Daniel Anderson. Daniel was previously married and had grown children at the time of his remarriage to Nancy. Nancy and Daniel did not have children.

Nancy's place of internment comes from a 1903 receipt for a white marble tombstone that Elizabeth (Hickman) Cross purchased for her mother, to be inscribed:
"Nancy, wife of Jacob Hickman. Died Dec 12 1886. Age 86 years"
The tombstone receipt states the stone is to be placed in Cross Cemetery, Wetzel County, WV. The woman who bought the tombstone, Elizabeth (Hickman), was married to a Nathan Cross, and her address was given as Uniontown, WV. (now Littleton).

Nancy's surname of "Anderson" as listed in this findagrave memorial, is per the wishes of descendants of Daniel Anderson, and does not match the inscription on her tombstone, per the purchase record.
