William Rodewald, 91 (above), of Rt. 1, Newton, pioneer town resident and
retired rural mail carrier, died unexpectedly Thursday morning at the home of
his granddaughter, Mrs. Edward Treick of Rt. 3, Manitowoc. He had gone there
Monday on a visit and was stricken with a heart attack.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Salem Ebenezer Reformed
Church in Newton. The Rev. K. T. Stubbe will officiate and burial will be in
the church cemetery.
Mr. Rodewald was born in Newton in 1860 and for many years operated a cheese
factory in the town. He sold the factory in 1903 and for 14 years was a rural
mail carrier out of the Newton Postoffice. He retired in 1917, and for a number
of years engaged in the insurance business.
He was a past president and a director of the Newton Fire Insurance Company for
50 years and served several terms as town treasurer. Sixty-eight years ago he
married Miss Emelia Wernecke. She died in 1918.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. George Roseman of Herman, Sheboygan County; two
sons, Emil of Rt. 1, Newton, and Louis of Manitowoc Rapids; 11 grandchildren
and 22 great grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Gustave Stockmeier of Newton,
preceded him in death in 1951.
Friends may call at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, after
Saturday noon. The casket will be moved to the church at noon Sunday.
