He was born in Florence, SC, the only child of Pat and Ellen Coker King. He graduated from Florence High School and the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and the Kappa Pi Honorary Art Fraternity.
After graduation, he taught art in Florence public schools. After serving two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, he moved to Richmond, VA, in 1960, and was an assistant buyer at Miller & Rhoads Department Store. He returned to Florence in 1978, where he worked for the S.C. Department of Disabilities and Special Needs until his retirement.
He was active for many years in the Florence Little Theatre, from the old air base theatre to the current theatre. Mr. King was a member of First Baptist Church, and the 50-Year Club.
He is survived by many cousins, including Mary Jane Patterson of Clemson, SC, Betty Ann Simmons of Charleston, Grace M. Conder of Nevils, GA, Ellen Allgood of Anderson, William Conder and Patricia Conder of Patrick, SC, Bobby Coker of Lugoff, and Edna Coker of Clemson; and his caregiver, Christopher H. Jeffords of Florence.
