Le Roy Bird, age 89, of Harrisburg, formerly of Galatia, passed away at 8:51 PM, Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at his residence in Harrisburg. Le Roy was born on Sunday, January 17, 1926 to the late Owen and Ethel (Guye) Bird, in Corinth Township, Williamson County. Le Roy married Fern Farmer on May 17, 1958 and she survives in Harrisburg. Le Roy was coalminer and truck driver. He worked six years for MayFlower Trucking moving goods all over the United States. He then worked for Bonifield Trucking as a road driver in St. Louis, Paducah, and Chicago. He most recently worked for Illinois Department of Transportation. Le Roy was a United States Army Veteran and served in the Korean War in the 143 MLR and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Le Roy was a member of the Galatia First Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge #749 at Akin, Swords of Bunker Hill, former trustee at Galatia First Baptist Church. Le Roy was very civic minded and served the community of Galatia for twenty-four years as Mayor, twenty years for Galatia Township, fifty years as precinct committee man and vice chairman of the Saline County Republican Party; he also served two years as Chief Deputy Sherriff. Le Roy is survived by his wife, Fern Bird of Harrisburg; daughter, Sharon Turner and husband Kevin of Harrisburg; son, Roland Bird of Thompsonville; daughter, Cathy Graves of Harrisburg; three grandchildren, Ashley Hatton of Galatia and Justin Sachsel; Jordan Bird and wife Riley of Marion, and Kasey Buckman and husband Matt of Eldorado; four great grandchildren, Payson Bird, Hadley Bird, Gradie Bird, and Matilyn Buckman; three brothers, Harold Bird and wife Judy of Valier, Illinois, James Bird of Benton, Illinois, and William Bird and wife Sue of West Frankfort, Illinois; sister, Louise Braden of Louisiana; and sister Alice Reed and husband Paul of Carterville. Le Roy was preceded in death by his parents, half brother, Wayne Bird; and half sister, Helen Evans. Funeral services were held at 1 PM, Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Rev. Jordan Bird and Neal Patterson officiated. Burial followed in Ebenezer Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Harrisburg and Carrier Mills American Legion and Veterans of Foreign wars posts and the National Guard out of Marion. Visitation was held from 4 PM to 8 PM, Friday, May 29, 2015 at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg with Masonic rites at 7 PM conducted by the Akin Lodge #749. Memorials may be made to the Carmi Baptist Children's Home.
