Coney graduated from Oak Grove High School of Rosston, Arkansas. When Coney arrived in Vietnam 8 November 1967, he was assigned to Headquarters and Service Battery, 2nd Battalion, 40th Infantry, 199th Infantry Brigade, USARV.
While on patrol near Xom Thuan Quan, the vehicle came under hostile artillery and rocket fire. Coney and 2 others were killed.
Survived by his parents, John Ellis Jr. and Gussie Lee (Martin) Ellis and his brother, Everest.
