Son of Edwin Thorne and Phebe Ketcham, husband of Hildegarde Kobbe, and father of Phebe T. (married Joseph Francis Dempsey Jr.), Francis Burritt Jr., Julia Loomis, and Oakleigh Thorne II.

"Francis Burritt Thorne, the son of Edwin Thorne and Phoebe (Ketchum) Thorne, came into this world one fine Sunday, March 13, 1892. He claims New York City as his birthplace. "Bug" was preceded at Yale by, as near as he can remember, twelve relatives. His preparation for Sheff was made at the Pomfret School, Browning, and a little tutoring thrown in. Freshman year he roomed alone at 119 Wall Street. The next year was spent with "Johnny" Wilson at 84 Wall Street. His Senior year he lived with George Brown at 111 Grove Street. "Bug" is a member of St. Elmo Club and Delta Phi. Freshman year he made his numerals at Crew. He is Vice President of the Pomfret Club, and is a member of the Yale Aero Club. "Bug" will start his business life sweeping out a bank. His mail can be directed to 558 Madison Avenue, New York City."

On June 2, 1917, enrolled at the Navy Yard, New York, NY from Babylon, NY, as a Boatswain Mate 2nd Class, at the age of 25 years, 3 months. He served until September 28, 1917.

Obituary - Francis Burritt Thorne, Senior partner of F.B. Thorne & Co., investment brokers, 14 Wall Street, Manhattan, and a member of the New York Stock Exchange, died Saturday at his home in Islip, NY.

Mr. Thorne, who was chairman of the board of directors of North Central Texas Oil Co., was a son of Edwin Thorne, a founder of the New York Zoological Society, Mrs. Phoebe Ketchum Thorne. He was graduated from Yale in 1914, and took special courses in Annapolis. In World War I, he served as a lieutenant on the destroyer Wainwright.

He was a member of the Yale Club of New York, the Sons of the Revolution, the Raquet and Tennis Club, and the Southside Sportsman's Club of Oakdale, L.I.

Surviving are his wife, who was Mrs. Hildegarde Kobbe Stevenson at their marriage, four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Dempsey Jr., Julia Thorne, Mrs. Stuart M. Roesler and Mrs. Frederick Hard; two sons, Francis B. Thorne Jr., and Oakleigh Thorne 2d; two sisters, Mrs. Phebe Tucker and Mrs. Anna Augusta Titus, and a brother, Landon K. Thorne.
