Hope was the daughter of Charles B. and Nettie (Cramer) Kaufman. She graduated cum-laude from Bryn Mar University where she also received her masters and doctorate degrees. In 1960 she studied for a year in Spain as a Fulbright Fellow.

She married Robert Lincoln Goodale, a professor of music at Bryn Mar and eventually the department dean.

Hope was a lecturer in Spanish at Pennsylvania Military College for several years. Later in her career she went to Widener College where she was a professor of modern languages.
