Mary Callaway Doering, beloved member of the Helena community, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2006, in Reno Nev., where she had lived for the past six years with her daughter, Mimi and her son-in-law, Craig Mantele.

Mary's roots in Montana ran deep. She was born in Great Falls on March 22, 1917, the fifth, youngest and last-surviving child of Lewellyn Link and Ellen "Nellie" Callaway. Christened Mary Elizabeth Callaway, she was the granddaughter to James L. Callaway, the first secretary of the Montana Territory. Her father was the mayor of Virginia City, judge and chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court from 1922 to 1935.

Mary graduated from Helena High School and attended Northwestern University. In 1939 she married Gordon L. Doering, who practiced dentistry in Helena for 40 years. Gordon had intended to spend only a short time in Montana, but became infatuated with Mary during the 1939 New Year's Eve celebration at the Montana Club. They were married for 59 years, had five children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Together they divided their 20 retirement years between Helena and Palm Desert, Calif.

Mary was active in Helena community social events. She was a lifelong member of PEO. She co-chaired the Charity Ball fundraisers for St. Peter's Hospital and played a leading role in events such as Montana's centennial celebration.

Most of all, Mary was devoted to her family. All of the Doering children grew up enjoying the love of Mary's mother, Nellie, her brother, Pete Callaway, her sister, Miriam "Mimi" Goza, Mimi's husband, Sam Goza, her brother-in-law, Dr. Walter Doering and his wife, Betty, and her nephews, Drs. Harper and Beezie Jones and Dr. Sam Goza III.

A beautiful, caring woman, Mary not only nurtured her children, she welcomed their friends into the Doering household. Genuinely sweet, Mary always had a kind word and a way of making others feel good about themselves. Never one to seek the limelight, she lived by her motto of "always think of other people first." Homemaker, family chauffeur and peacemaker, Mary Doering enriched the lives of others with her modesty, grace, generosity and sense of humor.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, in 1999. She is survived by her sons, Chuck (Carolyn) of Helena; Bruce (Lynn) of Los Angeles, Calif.; Tom (Tani) of Park City, Utah; and her daughters, Mimi (Craig) Mantele of Reno, Nev.; and Randy (Steve) Turpie of San Rafael, Calif. and by her six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Helena on Aug. 1. Those wishing to honor Mary's memory may send donations to St. Mary's Hospice, Attention: Kristin Burns, 18653 Wedge Parkway, Reno, NV 89511.
