Postmaster of Oak Grove, TN, Inn Keeper, Sheriff, & Attorney. Son of George & Charlotte "Cunnyngham" Turnley.

Walked to Nashville to join Capt. John Kennedy's company to fight the British in the War of 1812.

Married Mahala Taylor (1792-1844) on 10/9/1817 in Jefferson Co., to their union 9 children were born. They are: Amanda M., Caroline M, Permenas T., Elvira A., Elizabeth C., Lisbourn George, Mary Jane, Miranda A., & Cinderella L.

Some years after Mahara died, he married the widow of James Hays, Corcas Hays, on 10/24/1855.

John died at age 79, from blood poisoning, as the results of a serious injury when his ankle was crushed 13 days earlier, in a wooden barge accident on the French Broad River.
