LYON MOUNTAIN — Francis "Buck" Benware, 86, died Friday, July 11, 1997, at CVPH Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Sept. 4, 1910, in Chasm Falls, the son of Eli and Melvina (Stone) Benware.
Mr. Benware worked at Republic Steel in Lyon Mountain for 43 years until the mines closed in 1967. The for two years he worked for Wayne Tolbert, dismantling the mines and plant. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper.
Survivors include his wife, the former Eva Prespare; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Sylvester LaClair of Churubusco and Carolyn and Joe Varin of Chazy Lake; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Gary and Ruth Benware of Chateaugay Lake, Robert Benware of Churubusco and Donald and Wanda Benware of Lyon Mountain; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Irene and Mac Lancto of Cato, and Annabelle Burr of Hyde Park; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
Three sisters, Edith Marlow, Eva Ayers and Leona Benware, and five brothers. Ernest, Prosper, Ira, Ted and Charles Benware, all died before him.
Calling hours will be at the Benware home at 51 Second Street, Lyon Mountain, from 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:30 Monday at St. Bernard's Church. Lyon Mountain.
Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
The Lyon Mountain Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
