LINCOLN – Norman Russell Jordan passed away peacefully April 30, 2015 at EMMC in Bangor, Maine surrounded by many of his loving family. He was born November 5, 1926 in Hampden, Maine, the son of Charles and Helen (Clay) Jordan from Lincoln, Maine.
The family moved to Hamden, Connecticut in 1929 and remained there until 1941. This is where “Stormin Norman” was introduced to the game of golf. They returned to Lincoln in 1941 to continue the Cemetery Monument business his grandfather had started. He attended Mattanawcook Academy, but left before graduation to enlist in the U.S. Navy, receiving his G.E.D. after his tour of duty. From November 1943 until April 1946 he served as Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class aboard the USS Refuge and the USS Wisconsin in the European and Pacific theaters.
After returning to Lincoln from the Navy, he married Beulah Scott and they had two children, Scott and Barbara. During this time he started work in the Insurance business in which he would remain for many years. He and Beulah divorced after ten years and he remarried Marjorie Hockridge who had three sons, Stu, Brian and Bruce. They moved to the Portland area, had a new son Ronald, and then to Brunswick, Maine. Scott and Barbara stayed with their mother in Lincoln but remained in very close contact with him over the years. While in Brunswick, he changed his profession from Insurance to Accountant for Harold Plummer Contracting to BIW Estimating
Department from which he retired. Also, he built a camp on Cobbossee Lake in Litchfield where the family spent the summer months. He even did a little fishing but GOLF was always in his schedule. Upon retiring, he sold the house in Brunswick and purchased a motorhome. For several years he and Marge spent the winter in Florida and summer at the camp. Eventually, they moved to Florida, residing in Zephyrhills at Betmar Acres. As time passed, Marge’s health began to fail and they moved to Missouri, closer to her family. Upon her passing, he moved back to Betmar and lived there until his health situation required Nursing Home care. He came back to Lincoln and resided at Colonial Health Care until the time of his death. Norm had a wild passion for golf all his life, playing whenever he could and sometimes when he shouldn’t. His favorite saying was “It never rains on the golf course.” Many years ago, his picture was in the paper teeing off at Bath Country Club on New Years Day–Bath,Maine. He loved coming to Maine summers and playing in the Jordan Open, a family event. One of his many victories in this event was special. Due to an injured left hand, he played one handed and beat everyone. While in the nursing home, his goal was to get back out on the course but it just was not meant to be. Coinciding with the Jordan Open Golf Tournament was the Annual Jordan Family Reunion held at his sister’s (Eleanor’s) house on The Little Narrows. Norm truly loved this meeting of the many, many relatives scattered across the country and rarely missed this gala event. The Jordans were a very musical family. For many years the Reunion they would form a band with his mother (Helen) as the Leader playing piano. His brothers would join in playing trombone, sax, piano, trumpet and Norm would back them up on the drum (sometimes a big kettle–He didn’t mind, it was fun! The family loved this impromptu Jamming.
Norm had a zest for life and a charm about him with a smile you wouldn’t forget. We all loved him he loved us and he will never be forgotten.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Marjorie, his daughter Barbara and his siblings Lois, Raymond, Helen, Arnold, Harold, Phyllis, Malcolm, Richard and Harland.
He is survived by two sisters, Eleanor Worcester of Lincoln and Barbara Kneeland of Vermont. Son Scott Jordan, granddaughter Jodi Bartlett and husband Brian, great-grandchildren Tanner and MacKenzie. Son Ronald Jordan and wife Linda VanLerberg, grandchildren Tiffany, Shaun and Sienna. Son Stu Hockridge and wife Cindy, grandson Tobey and wife Morgan. Son Brian Hockridge and wife Cat, grandsons Barry Stetson, Marshall and wife Amy, Brandon and wife Hannah. Son Bruce Hockridge and wife Kim, and grandchildren Chase and Amber. Sisters-in-Iaw Laura Jordan and Jean Jordan of Lincoln, Pat Hubbard and husband Leon of Missouri, Marilyn Flannery of Florida, brother-in-law Jim Hill and wife Ruby of Florida. Many, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Especially, Jay and Roger Cole of Lincoln, Mark and Jayne Hockridge of Lincoln, Hal and Georgia Murray of Florida, Chris and Kelley Smith of New Brunswick and Fuzz Gagnon of New York.
Cremation and burial will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn, Maine beside his beloved wife Marge. No services are planned.
