George L. Burroughs was born on May 30, 1869 in Sisson, Missouri to John F. Franklin and Perneca (Perneecy) Thomas Burroughs. The family can be found in the Federal Census of 1870 and 1880 in Sisson, Missouri. George was the first child born to the family. Mortgage Trust Deeds show that the family lived in Independence County, Arkansas in 1886 and 1887. In 1893 the family traveled to Hunt County, Texas where George's Father, Mother and little brother, Claude, passed away. In 1894, George filed for and was approved as Guardian of his younger siblings so they could file for their Father's Civil War pension. George met and married Lula Brown Ritchey, daughter of James Sidney (Uncle Sid) Ritchey. Lula and her parents can be found in Precinct 1, Hunt County, Texas in the 1880 Federal Census. Children born to George and Lula were Claude Buell Burroughs in 1897 and Myrtle Burroughs in 1901. George Burroughs and Lula Ritchey are listed as parents on Claude's death certificate. In 1903, George's brother, James Thomas Burroughs, filed for and was approved as Guardian of their younger siblings. The court documents in Hunt County, Texas list this change in guardianship due to the death of George L. Burroughs on June 18, 1903.
