Funeral Services held, Burial in Hillside
Gerd Gerdes, 75, a resident of this community for many years, died at his home in Sheffield on Friday Nov. 27. He had been in poor health recently and was hospitalized for several weeks before returning to his home.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 30, with Rev. W. R. Yard officiating. A prayer service was held at the Wartnaby Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. and at the First Baptist church at 1:30. Music was furnished by Mrs. F. H. Eichmeier, pianist, and two vocal selections by Mrs. Francis Shull and Miss Dorothy Thurston. Burial was made in Hillside cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred Gerdes, Albert Gerdes, Will Gerdes, Fred Sprung, Henry Oetkin and Robert Fedellieck. In charge of the floral arrangements were Mrs. Leo Schroeder and Mrs. Walter Timmerman.
Gerd Gerdes was born in Odlenburg, Germany, on Oct. 17, 1878, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerd Gerdes. The family came to the United States six years later and settled on a farm west of Sheffield. Here Gerd grew to manhood and then went to live in South Dakota for a number of years. He returned to Sheffield and worked on farms and for many years was employed by the Sheffield Brick and Tile Co. Mr. Gerdes became a member of the First Baptist church in January 1900, and for over 12 years was caretaker of the church building. He was united in marriage with Mrs Alma Jensen on June 3, 1950.
Surviving are his widow, one sister, Mrs. Brandt of Bigstone City, S. D. who recently visited her brother returned home the day before Thanksgiving; and nieces and nephews."
